REFLECTING ON WHO WE’VE BECOME

If you’ve been following WMCD (Western MA Charity DanceAthon) over the last few years, you’ve probably noticed that we’ve grown. While our mission and commitment to empowering youth have remained the same, the scope of our work has expanded.

When WMCD was founded in 2021, the goal was simple: create an opportunity for young people to come together, have fun, and learn the importance of giving back through an annual DanceAthon event. Inspired by SHMD, a dance marathon in New York, a small group of volunteers brought that vision to life. In February 2022, twenty high school students attended our first event, raising $16,500 for Rick’s Place and KEVS Foundation.

Since then, we’ve had more than 250 students participate in our events, raised over $140,000 for local charities, built a dedicated volunteer team, and expanded our work beyond one weekend each year.

As we grew, we learned something important: our mission was never really about the DanceAthon itself. It was about creating opportunities for young people to have fun, build meaningful friendships, & realize they can make a difference.

We also made a commitment to listen. Students told us that what kept them coming back wasn’t the dance. It was the energy, the friendships, the games, the service, and the sense of belonging. That feedback led us to evolve our signature event into the All-Nighter and challenged us to think more broadly about who we were as an organization.

Over the last year, we talked with our volunteers, board members, alumni, youth team, and local students about the future of the organization. Those conversations made one thing clear: our identity had grown beyond our name.

After months of listening, planning, and reflecting, we’ve made the decision to rebrand our organization.

This wasn’t a decision we made lightly. It’s one rooted in who we’ve become, where we’re headed, and the young people we exist to serve.

Next week, we’re excited to introduce the new name that will help us carry this mission forward.
